Young Families Fall Kick-off This Sunday at 9AM!

Young Families Fall Kick-off This Sunday at 9AM!

Come join us for the fall kick-off of the Young Families class!  It will be a great time of fellowship, food, games, and giveaways.  We are going to spend some time talking about our class focus for the coming year and introduce the fall series that will start on Sept. 7th.  Been wondering what this "30 Day Challenge" is really about?  This is your chance to find out.

The leadership team will be providing breakfast tacos.  We would ask that you bring a breakfast item to share (fruit, muffins, pop tarts, hamburgers, etc.)

We hope to see you Sunday!

Class Notes -- Aug 27th

Matt finished his "Untouchables" series on Sunday with a discussion on a "Biblical perspective on submission & authority."  There was a lot of great discussion this week that went far beyond what is captured here.  If you missed class, ask someone about it -- have them tell you what they learned.

We focused on a couple of key passages of scripture:

Passage: 1st Corithians 6:1-11 Disputes and Higher Courts

1If any of you has a dispute with another, dare he take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the saints? 2Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? 3Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! 4Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, appoint as judges even men of little account in the church!5I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers? 6But instead, one brother goes to law against another—and this in front of unbelievers!

7The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated? 8Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers.

9Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Key points:

  • Paul directing Corithians not to take each other to court over disputes -- why?
  1. As believers, you will judge angels -- why are you going to a human court?
  2. Is there not someone wise enough among you to settle your dispute?
  3. Can't you work this out between each other before going to court?
  4. It is better to be wrong than to go to court

Passage: Hebrews 13:17 -- Real Authority

17Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.

 Key points:

  1. Obey your leaders and submit to them
  2. The elders are responsible before God for the care of your soul -- they will have to give an account of how they lead the flock
  3. Views on authority:
  • Unbelievers 50 AD -- Roman Rule >> Jewish Authority >> Patriarch >> Wife >> Kids
  • Unbelievers 2008 -- U.S. Government >> Husband & Wife >> Kids
  • Believers -- Christ >> Church (elders) & Government (parallel) >>Husband >> Wife >> Kids
Key Application:

  • As members of Grace Covenant Church, you are under the authoity of the church and the elders.  Unless the church is asking you to do something that goes against Christ (our ultimate authority), you should submit to their authority.
  • Wives are to submit to their husbands, husbands are to love their wives (Love and Respect)
Ephesians 5 -- 22Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.  25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26to make her holy, cleansingher by the washing with water through the word, 27and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.
